Design Systems That Actually Last

By Bhavin Mandani·July 8, 2026·1 min read

A design system is not a component library. A component library is furniture. A design system is the decision about how the room should feel.

Tokens before components

Start with the atoms: color, type scale, spacing, motion. If these are decided and named well, components become obvious. If they aren't, every component becomes a negotiation.

The maintenance trap

The most common failure isn't a bad system. It's a good system that nobody maintains. Ownership has to be someone's actual job, not a volunteer effort squeezed between deadlines.

  • Version your tokens
  • Document the why, not just the what
  • Make the right thing the easy thing

Consistency is a feeling

Users never see your design system. They feel it — in the way every button behaves the way they expect, in the rhythm of spacing that never surprises them. That invisible consistency is the whole point.
